Hum, jam, leak or dead: what each one means
| What you notice | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Humming but no spin | Jammed flywheel, often a bone, fruit pit or utensil | Free the flywheel, then test |
| Silent, no hum | Tripped reset button or dead power | Reset, then check the switch and circuit |
| Water under the unit | Failed sink flange seal, drain gasket or cracked housing | Reseal, or replace the unit if the housing is cracked |
| Slow or standing sink | Clog past the disposal in the drain | Clear the line |
| Foul smell | Food film inside the grind chamber and baffle | Clean, and check the drain trap |
A leaking disposal is the one that cannot wait. Water running down the housing pools in the cabinet and soaks the particleboard floor. Switch the unit off at the wall, put a bucket under it and call.
Jammed or humming: safe things you can try
Turn the power off at the switch, then at the breaker if you can reach it. Most disposals have a hex socket at the center of the underside that takes a 1/4 inch Allen wrench. Working the wrench back and forth frees many jams without opening anything.
Press the red reset button on the bottom after the unit has cooled for a few minutes. If it trips again right away, the motor is failing or the jam is still there. Do not use a screwdriver, and never reach into the chamber.
Before we arrive: disposal emergency steps
Four steps protect your hands and the cabinet.
Cut the power
Switch off the disposal and the breaker. Unplug a cord-connected unit if the outlet is dry.
Stop the water
Do not run the faucet into a leaking disposal. Close the angle stops if water is dripping from the supply.
Keep hands out
Even a switched-off unit can have a stuck blade. Use tongs only on a dead, unplugged unit.
Clear the cabinet
Take out cleaners and put a bucket under the leak. Tell us the brand on the label.
Disposal leaking onto the cabinet floor?
Call (215) 714-6692 and tell us whether the water drips from the top flange, the side, or the bottom.
Repair or replace the disposal
A jam, a tripped reset or a loose drain connection is a repair. A cracked housing, a seized motor or a leak from the shell is a replacement. Under-sink units are commonly sold in ranges from about 1/3 to 1 horsepower, and a larger motor handles scraps more easily.
Many disposals last years, but an old unit rusting through the shell is not worth a second repair. We tell you which side of the line yours is on before work starts. A clogged line past the disposal is a drain cleaning job, not a motor problem.
Installing a new disposal where there was none
Some kitchens have no disposal at all, and the sink drain just runs to the trap. Adding one means a larger sink flange, a mounting ring, a discharge elbow to the trap and, if there is a dishwasher, a connection for its drain hose. A dishwasher knockout plug inside the new unit must be removed, or the dishwasher will not drain.
A disposal also needs power. Some are hardwired and some plug into an outlet under the sink, and what is allowed or required depends on the unit and the local electrical code. The township permit page lists plumbing fixtures as permit work, so call Code Enforcement at (215) 643-3131 to ask how a disposal install is treated. Use a licensed electrician if a new circuit or outlet is needed. We do not run new electrical circuits.
What not to put down a disposal
Grease and oil
They coat the pipe and harden. This is the main reason kitchen lines back up. See hydro jetting for a heavily coated line.
Fibrous scraps
Celery, corn husks and artichoke leaves wrap around the blades.
Pits and bones
Large pits and bones can jam the flywheel.
Rice, pasta and coffee grounds
They swell or pack down in the trap and slow the drain.
What affects the price of garbage disposal repair and installation
A reset-and-clear visit costs less than a new unit with a new sink flange.
Repair or new unit
The motor size and brand of the disposal changes the price.
Existing connections
Corroded drain parts, a worn trap or a stuck dishwasher connection add parts.
Electrical needs
If a new outlet or wiring is needed, an electrician is a separate cost.
Sink type
Stainless, composite and stone sinks all affect how the flange is mounted.
Time of call
Night and weekend calls can carry a different rate than daytime visits.
Insurance usually covers sudden water damage but not a worn-out appliance, so ask your insurer. Want your real number? Call (215) 714-6692.
Questions about garbage disposal repair in Horsham
Yes. Dispatch runs 24/7 and we offer same-day appointments when available. Call (215) 714-6692 and describe whether the unit is jammed, humming, silent or leaking.
The flywheel is jammed. Switch off the power, work a 1/4 inch Allen wrench in the hex socket under the unit, then press the red reset button once it has cooled.
No. Do not put your hand in, even with the power off at the switch. Use the wrench from below, or call us.
Yes, if it fits your sink and the connections. Tell us the model, and ask about the power setup first.
It depends on the unit and the local electrical rules. Call Horsham Township Code Enforcement at (215) 643-3131, weekdays 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, to ask how it treats disposal installs. Use an electrician for any new wiring, because we do not run circuits.
Usually the drain beyond the disposal is blocked. That is a drain cleaning job, not a disposal fault.
Yes. We dispatch to Warrington and Maple Glen too. Tell us the street address when you call.
Run cold water while grinding, clear food film regularly and keep grease out. If a smell stays after cleaning, the trap or drain may be the source.

Plumbing work in Pennsylvania falls under the Uniform Construction Code, which adopts the International Plumbing Code (IPC) provisions, so ask Horsham Code Enforcement which edition applies before a permit is pulled.
